Autumn might signal the end of summer blooms, but it’s actually one of the best times to get stuck into the garden. The air is cooler, the soil still holds warmth from summer, and there’s plenty you can do now to set yourself up for a gorgeous garden next spring. </p>

<p>Give your garden’s tiniest residents a cosy place to hibernate. Bug hotels are easy to make and brilliant for supporting pollinators and beneficial insects. Use an old pallet or wooden box as a base, and fill it with natural materials like bamboo canes, pinecones, straw, and bark. Drill holes in logs for solitary bees and tuck it into a sunny-but-sheltered spot. It’s a fun project for kids too, and a great excuse to reuse garden clippings. And don’t forget our feathered friends – now is a good time to start putting out bird food.</p>

Think tulips in every shade from moody purples to crisp whites, daffodils from dainty to dramatic, plus fragrant hyacinths and cheerful crocus. You can also plant summer-flowering bulbs like lilies, alliums and crocosmia in September and October. Double the blooms, double the joy.</p>
