<p>If you&#8217;ve spent any amount of time researching hormones online then you&#8217;ve likely come across Dr Louise Newson. She&#8217;s a Physician and the founder of the free Balance hormone health app and the Newson Clinic. Plus, the host of the award-winning Dr Louise Newson podcast, and she&#8217;s on a mission. Embarking on a UK-wide tour, Dr Louise hope to educate the masses around the true science and history of hormones. Ahead of her shows at Chelmsford and Southend, Muddy caught up with her to find out why.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-can-you-tell-us-a-bit-about-your-tour-and-why-you-think-it-will-help-women">Can you tell us a bit about your tour and why you think it will help women?</h2>



<p>The tour starts on <strong>14 Apr</strong> and I will be travelling across the UK to spread the message about the power of hormones. I want not only to empower the audience, but to shock actually! With this tour, I want to educate as many people as possible about the numerous essential roles the hormones progesterone, estradiol and testosterone have throughout our bodies. And especially in our brains, so people can understand what can happen when those hormone levels reduce or change.</p>



<p>I&#8217;ve discovered some really shocking facts about how women with hormonal changes have been and still are mistreated. I&#8217;m keen to share this with others so that we don&#8217;t repeat the same mistakes. I hope to help women take charge of their own health and hormones so we can change the future together.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-is-the-show-just-for-menopausal-women">Is the show just for menopausal women?</h2>



<p>This tour is for any woman or man of any age who knows and cares about women. I&#8217;ll be taking the audience on a hormone journey from the teenage years onwards, so it&#8217;s something that people can bring their teenage daughters to. Women of all ages can really learn more about how important hormones are for their health and wellbeing.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-are-the-main-takeaways-from-your-tour">What are the main takeaways from your tour?</h2>



<p>Knowledge really is power, and the audience will be discovering how for so long hormones have been misunderstood. I talk about the confusion around older types of HRT and hormonal contraceptives compared with natural, body identical hormones. And how women have been mistreated and ignored by our healthcare systems. I want the audience to leave this show with new-found knowledge. To improve not only their health, but also the health of their loved ones, friends and colleagues too –&nbsp;spread the message!</p>



<p>I really want this show to be the start of a movement where we can help each other to end the suffering of women, and the audience is going to be a key part of that.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-do-you-think-there-are-still-so-many-misconceptions-around-hormones">Why do you think there are still so many misconceptions around hormones? </h2>



<p>Many women and clinicians are still confused about the difference between natural hormones and synthetic hormones that are in older types of hormones and contraceptives. It is essential that people know the difference as synthetic hormones are associated with risks. The majority of women with fluctuating or low hormone levels are not prescribed hormones. This then results in them both having symptoms and also health risks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-is-medical-misogyny-really-still-commonplace">Is medical misogyny really still commonplace?</h2>



<p>Absolutely, when it comes to hormone health. For too long women have been expected to accept dismissal, confusion and unnecessary suffering as normal. I was involved in the recent Apple TV docuseries<em> Balance, </em>which brought into sharp focus just how much misinformation still reigns in women&#8217;s hormone health. One of the prevailing messages of the series was that no woman should feel like they must suffer in silence. </p>



<p>From this, we created the #NotMe hashtag, which challenges misinformation, outdated thinking and misogyny (both conscious and unconscious) that dictate women&#8217;s hormone health. It brings women&#8217;s stories and experiences into the open, giving a voice to the problems, barriers, difficulties and the dogma women face every single day. Through real faces and real stories, #NotMe aims to break down barriers through informed choice, empowerment through knowledge, and equal access to care.</p>



<p>Every day, I hear stories from women who are not listened to and not believed by doctors. They are being turned away and not prescribed the hormone treatments they both want and need. This is unacceptable and needs to change.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-there-s-a-lot-of-talk-about-how-diet-can-affect-our-hormones-is-that-right">There&#8217;s a lot of talk about how diet can affect our hormones? Is that right?</h2>

<p>When hormone levels are low there is more inflammation in our bodies. Eating healthy foods that are not processed is important  –&nbsp;eating processed foods can increase inflammation further. So it&#8217;s important to eat a varied diet with plenty of fibre and vegetables as well as protein.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-can-our-hormones-affect-mental-health">How can our hormones affect mental health?</h2>



<p>Our hormones progesterone, estradiol and testosterone are made in our brains as well as our ovaries. When levels of these hormones fluctuate and reduce then our brains can be negatively affected in various ways. These hormones help our cells and neurones in our brains to function properly and also work as neurotransmitters (chemicals when send signals from one part of the brain to another). They also affect levels of other neurotransmitters such as dopamine, melatonin and serotonin. Low levels of hormones can negatively affect pleasure in things, sleep and mood.</p>
