<p>Now we know that visiting Father Christmas has become a little competitive in recent years, with actual Lapland being peak magic-making material (according to that parent in the playground who took their kids last year!). Unfortunately most of us don’t have the budget, so it’s just as well there are plenty of places you can still find Father Christmas in Essex, all of which tick the memory-making boxes for a fraction of the price. </p>

<p>First up is <a href="https://christmasfestessex.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Christmas Fest Essex</a>, which you’ll find set within 10 acres of untouched woodland in Billericay. The 3 hour family experience costs from £40 for Nov dates, and from £50 for Dec dates. Journey through the forest, meeting festive characters along the way. Visit the workshop, explore the village and ride the train to Santa’s Grotto, before enjoying 40 minutes of ice skating. Weekend dates in Dec are sold out, as are the last two weekends in Nov, so act fast to nab the tickets that are left.</p>

<p><a href="https://audley-end-railway.co.uk/seasonal-event/christmas-special/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Audley End Miniature Railway</a> Christmas experience is especially magical for little ones. Hop aboard the train which will take you on a journey through the enchanted woodland with twinkly lights and festive scenes, to meet Father Christmas and Mother Christmas, as well as a few of their friends. As well as touch of theatre, thanks to the Nutcracker and a graceful ballerina, children will get to write a letter to Father Christmas and make magical reindeer food. At the end of the trip there&#8217;s the chance to toast marshmallows (at a small extra cost), and enjoy a spin on the Christmas carousel. There are very few tickets weekend tickets, but more availability for during the week. (Tickets range from £23.25 &#8211; £40.25 for adults and children over 92cm; Children under 92cm, half price; Children under 1, free).</p>

<p><a href="https://hopefield.org.uk/christmas-at-ho-ho-hopefield/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Christmas at H-Ho-Hopefield</a> promises to be a fun family day out, at a very reasonable price –&nbsp;you will need to prebook time slots for Santa, but prices include entry to the Animal Sanctuary which you can explore during opening hours: Adults, £11.53; Children, £20.96; Under 2&#8217;s, £5.76. Kids get to write a letter to Santa, follow the Christmas trail, enjoy some festive arts and crafts and see the big man who will give them a pressie. You can all visit the Miniature Christmas Village, and kids are all given a free gingerbread and warm squash to keep them toasty. And grown ups don&#8217;t get left out, you&#8217;ll get a mince pie and mulled wine to keep you warm!</p>

<p>A favourite with Annual Pass holders for <a href="https://adventureisland.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Adventure Island</a> and <a href="https://sealifeadventure.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sealife Adventure</a> (you can see Father Christmas for half price if you are), this is a jam-packed experience. Tickets are £40 per children, but that includes one free adult admission to meet Father Christmas and join them on the rides. Extra adults tickets can be purchased for £10. Children will get to visit Santa in a cosy cottage in Christmasville, and exchange their toy voucher in the magical Christmas toy store. They can also write to Santa, do some festive colouring and make reindeer food. There will be storytimes and games throughout the day. As if that wasn&#8217;t plenty to keep you busy, every child will also receive vouchers for a round of golf at <a href="https://adventureisland.co.uk/ride/adventure-golf/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Adventure Golf</a>, free entry to<a href="https://sealifeadventure.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> Sealife Adventure</a>, £2 worth of games at<a href="https://adventureisland.co.uk/ride/funtopia-prize-arcade/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> Funtopia Arcade</a> and a meal voucher for <a href="https://www.sandsbythesea.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sands by the Sea</a> and<a href="https://feelgoodssouthend.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> Feelgoods Diner</a> (when purchased alongside a full paying adult). <p><a href="https://www.marshfarm.co.uk/events/father-christmas-experience/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Marsh Farm Magical Christmas Experience</a> is well known for being pretty authentic, and they’ve added to the magic this year with an Elf Academy, where you get the chance to be inducted as an honorary elf, plus you get to make your own teddy at The Teddy Bear Market. They too have an ice rink! Prices for this one start at £39 for a weekday in Nov, but want to go on a weekend towards the end of Dec and it does jump to £75 a ticket (we hear it&#8217;s well worth it).</p>

<p>Another place that the kids will love just as much, but at a more reasonable price, is <a href="https://www.wyvernwood.co.uk/whats-on/christmas/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Wyvernwood’s Enchanted Mydwinter Festival </a>at £40 per head (FYI adults get a complimentary mulled wine). Step through the Magic Portal and land in the sparkling, enchanted kingdom. Within the castle grounds, kids can get involved with writing a letter to Father Christmas, decorating gingerbread men with Mother Christmas, creating wooden stars with the fairies and brewing shimmering potions with Merlin&#8217;s apprentice.</p>

<p>Prices for <a href="https://www.eorailway.co.uk/events/santa-specials/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Santa&#8217;s Special Trains at Epping Ongar Railway</a> are varied, but a family space for 2 people starts at £65 in Nov and goes up to £80 at the end of Dec. Join the vintage London bus service at either Epping Underground station or in Ongar which will take you to North Weald station. There you can indulge in something from the festive food stall, listen to the live brass band and meet some of the festive characters while you wait to board the train. Once aboard the train that will take you on a return journey through the ancient Epping Forest, Santa will visit each and every child to give them a present.</p>

It’s a shorter experience, which can be great for kids that find it all a bit overwhelming, and costs just £16.50, not including zoo entry. Plus, and this is a biggy when it comes to saving the pennies, only the kids need a ticket! Take a break at Mrs Claus’ Kitchen where you can enjoy a tasty treat on your journey to meet the big man himself. Discover how ‘Mila &amp; River’, the Amur leopard toys are made in the Elf Workshop and see if you can spot the cheeky elves playing. Visit the main man himself and receive a special gift, Mila &amp; River the Amur leopards. You can also discover the story of ‘Mila &amp; River the Amur leopards’ by buying the story book (£1.99) when you buy your Santa Experience tickets. Weekends in Dec are already sold out, but there are a few tickets remaining for 22 and 23 Dec, plus more availability on Nov weekends.</p>
