<p>World Book Day lands on&nbsp;<strong>5 March&nbsp;</strong>(cue the last-minute costume panic from disorganised parents everywhere). But take a deep breath – we’re not suggesting glue guns or emergency cardboard creations. Instead, we’ve rounded up the best story-themed nature trails to explore with the kids. From woodland wanders to sculpture hunts, here are eight magical book-inspired walks across East Anglia where stories spill out into the great outdoors.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-essex">ESSEX</h2>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-brambly-hedge-abberton-reservoir-colchester"><a href="https://www.essexwt.org.uk/visit/nature-trail/brambly-hedge" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Brambly Hedge</a>, Abberton Reservoir, Colchester</h3>

<p>Look carefully amongst the tangled roots and brambles at Abberton Reservoir and you might discover the Brambly Hedge mice from Jill Barklem’s Brambly Hedge series. Proving too elusive? Stick to the colourful character sculptures dotted around the buggy and wheelchair-friendly trail instead! Pick up a map from for £1 from the Nature Discovery Centre and set to work locating Wilfred and his friends, including Primrose and Lord &amp; Lady Woodmouse. There’s seven characters in all, as well as a wildlife quiz and all kinds of mouse-based facts to learn. You’ll also find a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/things-to-do/green-spaces/epping-forest/brambly-hedge-trail" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Brambly Hedge trail at Epping Forest&nbsp;</a>(where Jill Barklem lived locally and drew inspiration for her books). But it’s worth knowing that the Gloucester Ride section of the trail (between the Epping Forest Visitor Centre at Chingford and Connaught Water), is temporarily closed due to repair works. Instead take the circular accessible path around Connaught Water, where you can still discover 12 out of the 17 carved oak characters.</p>

<p>Head ups: Pack the snacks for the&nbsp;<em>Stick Man</em>&nbsp;Trail – while the trail itself isn’t exhausting, it is easy to while away a whole day at Weald Country Park, and easy to see why Stick Man might have trouble getting back to his family tree! Start at the Weald Visitor Centre where you can buy a map for 80p from the Wiggly Bush café (or download one&nbsp;<a href="https://ca1-exe.edcdn.com/Stickman-Leaflet-2024-with-sculptures.pdf?v=1747227266" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">here</a>), and head out into the vast park to meet six of the characters from the much-loved Julia Donaldson book. See Axel Scheffler’s illustrations come to life, including squirrel, swan, rabbit and frog, and of course the man himself, carved into the Stick Man tree. The map is worth taking –&nbsp;it has some fun stick-based activity ideas for each area of the trail, plus there are a couple of excellent play areas and den building to tackle. You can also spot and feed deer at the deer park here (remember to buy a bag of food from the visitor centre).</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-norfolk">NORFOLK</h2>

<p>As England’s first UNESCO City of Literature, Norwich doesn’t just talk the literary talk – it walks it and sits on it too. The&nbsp;<a href="https://www.visitnorwich.co.uk/book-benches/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Book Bench Trail</a>&nbsp;scatters beautifully crafted benches across the city, shaped like open books, towering tomes and bookmarked classics engraved with the names of local literary legends, from Julian of Norwich to Philip Pullman. It’s the perfect excuse for a gentle city stroll in celebration of World Book Day – part culture fix, part coffee crawl. Allow an hour or so to wander between benches, dip into independents, and smugly absorb Norwich’s bookish brilliance. And no literary wander would be complete without a visit to our most marmalade-devoted resident. You’ll find Paddington Bear perched on a bench in Cathedral Close, just follow the marmalade paw prints. Obvs!</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="x_h-bewilderwood-hoveton"><a href="https://bewilderwood.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">BeWILDerwood</a>, Hoveton</h3>

<p>Board the storytelling boat and glide across the lake into the wildly imaginative world of&nbsp;<a href="https://bewilderwood.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">BeWILDerwood</a>, the brainchild of author&nbsp;Tom Blofeld&nbsp;(nephew of cricket commentator Henry). Set within 18 acres of marsh and woodland in the&nbsp;Norfolk Broads, this is no blaring-plastic theme park – its story-led adventure with serious style. Treehouses, zip wires, jungle bridges, den building, craft corners and daily storytelling sessions keep children happily feral all day long, while grown-ups can enjoy the surprisingly serene, leafy setting. The magic began on the page with Blofeld’s enchanting book series – among them&nbsp;<em>A Boggle at BeWILDerwood</em>,&nbsp;<em>The BeWILDerbats</em>,&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>Minty and the Big Stink</em>. Even better? Almost everything the characters get up to in the books; your kids can recreate in the woods. Fresh air, freedom, and a proper storybook adventure. World Book Day level: nailed!</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-norfolk-suffolk-border">NORFOLK/SUFFOLK BORDER</h2>

<p>For easy, outdoorsy family fun, High Lodge in&nbsp;Thetford Forest&nbsp;is hard to beat. For World Book Day, track down the 12 Gruffalos lurking in the pines – straight from the pages of&nbsp;Julia Donaldson’s beloved tale. Grab a leaflet at the visitor centre and let the kids lead the hunt. There’s also a Room On The Broom nature trail – help Witch find her hat, bow and wand. Pushchair-friendly paths, dog-friendly woodland, and a café serving solid muffin-and-mocha rewards make this a win all round.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-suffolk">SUFFOLK</h2>

<p>Little ones can settle in for story time at Ickworth Estate, where World Book Day is celebrated with cosy storytelling sessions in the atmospheric Stumpery. A gentle wander through the Italianate Garden leads to the reading spot, where the Welcome Team brings tales to life for children aged 3-6. Running on&nbsp;<strong>7-8 March</strong>&nbsp;from 10.45–11.15am, these free sessions are a lovely way to spark a love of books while seeing the gardens from a fresh perspective – just arrive in good time to stroll over from the car park.</p>

<p>Follow the seasons on a gentle nature trail at Sutton Hoo, inspired by the beautifully illustrated book&nbsp;<em>A Story of the Seasons</em>. Pick up a map from Visitor Welcome and wander through winter hedgerows, spring waters, summer meadows and autumn woods as you spot scenes from the story along the way. Created by Anna Wilson and Carolina Rabei in collaboration with the National Trust, the trail runs until&nbsp;<strong>15 March 2026</strong>&nbsp;and is free with admission. Expect colourful illustrations, plenty of nature to notice, and a leisurely wander that feels a bit like stepping inside the book.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cambridgeshire">CAMBRIDGESHIRE</h2>

<p>At Anglesey Abbey, a new sculpture trail brings the world of&nbsp;<em>The Wind in the Willows</em>&nbsp;into the gardens. From&nbsp;<strong>28 March to 5 May 2026</strong>, artist-designed sculptures created by Wild in Art pop up along the paths, turning a stroll through the grounds into a story-led adventure. Spot beloved characters as you wander, with installations dotted through key garden locations – a playful mix of art, nature and classic storytelling that gives families plenty to discover along the way.</p>
