Superflashy newsflash! The latest Essex news and gossip

Pop-ups, openings, closings and cool new festivals – it’s all happening here in Essex this summer. Remember you heard it here first, people!

Foodie news

Fancy a fun night out this week? The brilliant Parlour Home Cooking is popping up at Muddy Award winner Ginny’s Cocktail Lounge this Thursday (4 August) for a fab night of cocktails and contemporary Indian cuisine. See if you can grab a last-minute ticket!

There’s a cute new coffee shop in town (Braintree town, that is). Crammed full of lovely local treats – think Wilkin & Sons, Rossi Ice Cream and Mad Mike’s Chilli Jam – The Phoenix is a great little café-cum-deli on Bank Street. Plus, we’re told there may be tapas nights on the cards soon, so watch this space.

Music news

A festival in an aircraft hangar? Yep, Essex’s coolest new music event Southend City Festival (2-4 Sept) will make its debut at London Southend Airport this autumn. And, the lineup looks pretty cool too: Damon Albarn (the headline act), Fabio & Grooverider, Africa Express and The Music Man Project.

New openings

Maldon’s much-loved refill shop, Silo, has packed up shop and relocated to a lovely new spot in Wenlock Way. Cute and characterful on the outside and clean and contemporary on the inside, it’s the perfect place to enjoy some eco-friendly shopping.

Grab your sunnies and check out the King’s Arm’s in Colchester’s brand new alfresco area. After a six-figure revamp, the Crouch Street favourite has given its garden a much-needed makeover just in time to catch the last of those summer rays. Take shade in the wisteria-clad covered seating area or pull up colourful chair on the patio. With room for up to 200 people, you can bring all the family – even the pooch.

New Year's Day walks

Walking boots at the ready! Two amazing new walking routes have opened in Essex, making a massive 40 per cent of the coastline rambler-friendly. The first route runs from Tilbury to Southend-on-Sea (the county’s newest city) while the second stretches from Southend to Wallasea Island. Eighty-five miles of pathways have been added making this one epic stroll.

And closings…

Ok, there’s good news and there’s bad news. The bad news is that Polignano Deli & Coffee Shop closed its doors this week (massive sad face) but the good news is that the owners are teaming up with fellow Italian, Chelmsford-based neighbours Authentico for what is set to be an ‘all day proud Italian experience’. Stay tuned!

One for the kids

Is it September yet? *Groans loudly* If, like, us you’re struggling for new ideas on how to tucker the little sprogs out this summer then head to Aqua Splash’s new inflatable assault course in Chigwell on Luxborough Lake. There are 54 obstacles in total, including giant inflatable cushions for the kiddos to tire themselves out on. Good to know: the minimum age is six years old.

And finally…

Chelmsford’s Civic Theatre is currently undergoing a massive makeover to help mark its 60th birthday. Show-goers will be treated to a stylish new café and bar area (to stock up on those all-important interval snacks, obvs), plus the facilities and front of house area are both set to get a fashionable new facelift. Brilliant.
