The Cricketers, Clavering

The newly-refurbished restaurant with rooms bowling over locals and non-locals alike with its fine fare, fabulous interiors and family-friendly atmosphere.

Swit swoo. Nestled in the rolling North Essex countryside, this wisteria-clad 16th century pub is looking rather pretty after a modern yet sympathetic makeover courtesy of new owners, Chestnut Group.

Exposed beams, low ceilings (mind your head, chaps!), a crackling fire and a chiming Grandfather clock all help to retain the charm of this historic village pub while tanned leather banquettes, cool crockery and industrial-style lighting add just the right amount of country chic.

The Cricketers boasts an impressive culinary past, too. Previously owned by Jamie Oliver’s parents, this is where the famous Essex-born chef learnt the ropes as a kiddo (his pasta machine is still used in the kitchen now). And, the quality of the food hasn’t faltered since with the restaurant recently being awarded a Michelin Plate. What’s on the menu? Locally-supplied fish and cuts of meat (butchered on site) complemented by freshly-baked bread and seasonal fruit and veg. This Muddy Editor devoured the sizzling 10oz Shorthorn Ribeye Steak, which was delicious FYI – as were the Espresso Martinis. Oh, and there’s also a kids menu for little Mudlings and dedicated doggy meals for pooches. Pawfect.

Upstairs (or a short stumble across the road), you’ll find 22 beautifully-decorated rooms with botanical-inspired wallpaper, paintings and fabrics that nod to the surrounding Essex countryside. Ideal, if like me, you’ve enjoyed a drink or two with dinner. *Hic* Cute points go to the little metal canister filled with milk given to you on arrival, which is very welcome come morning when you want to enjoy a steamy cuppa in bed before slowly making your way downstairs for the award-winning brekkie.

The village itself may be small, but the pub is only a short 10 minute drive to Audley End House & Gardens (great for a day out with the sprogs) and 15 minutes from historic market town and Muddy favourite, Saffron Walden. Lovely walks and cycling routes are also aplenty in this neck of the Essex woods.

Good to know? The pub has its very own electric car charging points. Brilliant.
