Hylands Estate, Chelmsford

Hylands Estate is a prestigious Grade II* listed public park encompassing 574 acres of historic parkland and is the jewel in Chelmsford’s crown.

The beautifully renovated Neo-Classical elegant villa Hylands House can be hired for any occasion including weddings, celebrations, and business events, and is open to the public every second Sunday of the month for their Open Estate Days.

With a rich and varied history, Hylands was built around 1730 for Sir John Comyns; the original house was a red brick Queen Anne style mansion with approximately 400 acres of land. Through the numerous ownerships and architectural changes the Estate became its largest in the Victorian era during John Atwood’s ownership where the Estate stood at 4,300 acres. Now at approximately 574 acres Hylands Estate is enjoyed by thousands of people that visit the Park and to use the house as a venue.

There is plenty to do at Hylands Estate, whatever the weather and whenever the time of year! They have a wide range of events and workshops taking place throughout the year; however, the grounds are open all throughout the year for you to visit when the park is open, making it the ideal visitor destination to explore at your leisure. Explore Hylands Estate on foot following five mapped walks, ranging from a 30-minute stroll to a four-mile leisurely hike. Their free multimedia tour shares the rich history of Hylands House and the extensive gardens.

Originally built to house Hylands Estate horses, The Stables has now been restored as a vibrant space for the Hylands Artist Studios. The Stables, at the heart of the Estate, also offers an Artist Shop and an Information Point, which is the perfect place to enjoy with friends and family. Meet resident artists and designers as they create unique bespoke pieces in their studios and perhaps discover a classic book as you browse in the Friends of Hylands House second-hand book shop.

The Deli café in The Stables offers a varied menu that, as well as their usual offering, boasts plenty of vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options. Savour fresh, made-to-order sandwiches and seasonal salads, plus their famous homemade sausage rolls, cakes, pastries and tarts crafted by staff at The Deli’s farm kitchens in West Hanningfield.

Within the park, there are formal Victorian Gardens and ancient woodlands that are accessible as well as an award-winning accessible children’s Adventure Playground. The playground boasts four-meter-high castle battlements with portcullis and a cool drawbridge entrance with dedicated play areas for children above and below the age of six. Perfect for imaginative play and exhausting little ones. Grab a tea or coffee at The Deli Express and let the children roam free. The Adventure Playground is located near the park entrance off Greenbury Way.
