What started as a small, rustic indie on the outskirts of town in 2001 has now transformed into an all-singing, all-dancing uber trendy cafe, deli and vast all-day dining space in the buzz of the city.

Overlooking the River Chelmer on New London Road, this family run outfit is the relaxed, stylish eatery Instagram was made for: think rustic leather booths, grain-studded wooden tables, brass lighting fixtures and lunch plates you’ll spend more time snapping than eating. 

Now Chelmsford’s largest independent deli and cafe, A Canteen offers up everything from premium coffee and crisp white wine, to shareable sourdough pizzas and ‘posh’ fish fillet burgers, as well as contemporary vegan dishes and, of course, a fabulous bottomless brunch menu.  

So where did it all go right? Well, having a stylish eye for modern design details and a happy workforce certainly play their part, says co-owner Emma. ‘Since we launched our first little deli, every single member of staff has become part of our extended family tree. Now, we’ve also started up socially distanced events again, from live stand-up to Boozy Bingo.’
