The new-season fashion trends to take you into A/W 2020

Coveting new-season fashion trends to add to basket? We've got the five leading wardrobe wins to nail A/W style, plus the local boutiques to shop them in

Look-at-me collars

L-R: Ganni dress, £315.77, La Redoute shirt, £58, Monki t-shirt, £20.

Forget power shoulders, this season its all about the power collar and it’s the bigger the better, offset with feminine curved edges, embroidery and frills. Cult Copenhagen brand Ganni do it best (and at surprisingly reasonable prices for a designer brand) with loads of collared beauties in bright prints, like this pretty check dress, above. Or, if you’re playing it safe, stick to what you know and incorporate the trend with a crisp white shirt or t-shirt. Layer up your collar underneath a crew neck jumper (all the It-Girls are doing it). For local designer finds, head to Annabelle in Colchester and Lewis Yates in Billericay – both boutiques specialise in bringing fashion-forward finds to Essex and you’re bound to ‘collar’ a directional blouse (or three) among the rails of By Malene Birger, Essential Antwerp and Selected Femme.

Full-throttle red

L-R: Iris & Ink dress, £130, & Other Stories top, £17, Hobbs trousers, £99, H&M skirt, £24.99.

When you think of the classic autumn/winter colour palette, it’s all neutral tones, rusts and earthy hues – but not this year. Traffic-stopping red is the season’s hottest colour, and you should be wearing it from head to toe. For an easy option, stick with a dress (we love this flattering wrap design from Iris & Ink, above), or mix and match separates of the same shade. Stick to subtle, neutral accessories to avoid overkill. We love the current pillar-box/deep burgundy offerings at Number Six in Chelmsford, which stocks everyone from Baum Und Pferdgarten and Day Birger Mikkelson to DVF and Samsoe & Samsoe. See you there!

Knitted vests

L-R: Asos, £28, COS, £99, H&M, £19.99.

This one’s a bit like Marmite, but we’re coming round to the idea! Knitted vests are moving away from their country club golf course image and into the fashion spotlight with chunky knits, neutral tones and can actually look super-chic layered over a white shirt with chunky gold jewellery. This trend might be tricker to find in the smaller boutiques, so our best bet is a rummage round Intu Lakeside Shopping Centre in Thurrock. Featuring the likes of AllSaints, Zara, H&M and Whistles, we think you’ll find the very ‘vest’ of knitted numbers here that are just the right side of cool but cosy.

Matrix chic

L-R: Zara dress, £49.99, Mango jacket, £339.99, H&M jacket, £39.99

No one can be told what The Matrix is, but you can sure be told how to nail the trend. Think clean lines, long macs, trenches, dresses – all in leather of course.  If you’re nervous and don’t want to splurge too much cash, go for a faux leather number like this sleek H&M one (above right). Don’t forget to add a slick back pony tail and tiny sunglasses (yes, really). Keanu would be proud. Not sure about donning a leather coat? Why not try the look out with trousers first and see how you get on? Blue in Saffron Walden is stocking a beautiful line of ‘Oakwood’ leather culottes and trousers right now, but your classic leather biker.

Cardigan comeback

L-R: & Other Stories, £45, Jigsaw fine knit, £120, Free People, £158

On trend and comfy? Just how we like it. The cardigan is a sartorial staple for A/W 2020 and there’s plenty of choice from elegant wrap styles (we love this mint & Other Stories one) to chunky and slouchy knits. You likey? Find more gorgeous cardigans to add to basket in our feature here, and check out Leigh-on-Sea’s Kiss Kiss. We’re a little bit in love with the boutique’s ‘Ruby Wrap Knit‘ and, despite its questionable name, there’s a huge drop of contemporary, classy knits coming online soon, too. Hello, add to basket….
