Just four miles from St Lawrence Creek and the River Blackwater, the estuary&#8217;s renowned for its salt marshes and mud flats, eventually meeting the North Sea. <p>OK, so fine dining might not be bang on your doorstep, but you can enjoy a good meal and tipple locally. <a href="https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.122109056276272026&amp;type=3&amp;locale=en_GB">The Kings Head</a>, which dates back to the 1500s, serves all you expect from a traditional pub: fish and chips, pizza to eat in or take away, breakfasts you&#8217;ll struggle to finish and roasts to keep coming back for. <a href="https://greenmanbradwellonsea.co.uk">The Green Man Inn</a> is another recommend – not only for its food and drink but also for the fact it was once a smugglers&#8217; inn! <a href="https://www.facebook.com/BitsandBobsCakesandBiscuits" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Bits n Bobs Tea Rooms </a>in Southminster (15 min drive) is the kind of place to gossip with friends while scoffing paninis, toasties, jacket spuds and slabs of cake. And, for posh nosh it&#8217;s got to be nearby Maldon&#8217;s&nbsp;<a href="https://www.lebouchon.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Le Bouchon</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://sarkrestaurant.co.uk/sark-menu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sark</a>.</p>

As well as being the local polling station, there are children&#8217;s dance classes, youth club, and Brownies and Guides. <p>First up are the beaches, renowned for sandy shorelines depending where you head. We&#8217;re all in for the <a href="https://www.essexwt.org.uk/nature-reserves/bradwell-shell-bank" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Shell Bank Nature Reserve</a> with its cockle and oyster shells and home to thousands of wintering birds. On the coast is <a href="https://www.bradwellchapel.org/">St Peter’s Chapel</a>, open to visitors and said to have been built in 654. That&#8217;s right, 654 (not a typo). There are walks galore, and for sailing and powerboat experiences head to <a href="https://www.essexoutdoors.com/our-centres/bradwell/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Essex Outdoors Bradwell</a>. Over in Maldon&#8217;s Promenade Park there&#8217;s a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.visitmaldon.co.uk/splash-park/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Splash Park</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.visitmaldon.co.uk/promenade-park/pirates-bay.php" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Pirates Bay Adventure Golf</a>, crabbing lake, BMX track, skateboard park and play area, while&nbsp;<a href="https://jandcpartypets.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Maldon Promenade Zoo</a>&nbsp;is home to more than 70 species.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-culture">CULTURE</h2>



<p>Visit the 19th-century <a href="https://www.prisonhistory.org/lockup/bradwell-on-sea-lock-up/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Bradwell Prison Lock Up</a>, once used to temporarily hold criminals for minor offences or drunks overnight. Also check out <a href="https://essex.muddystilettos.co.uk/little-black-book/directory/thegallerymaldon/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Gallery Maldon</a> with its contemporary paintings, ceramics and sculptures, while a half hour trip takes you to <a href="https://www.museumofpower.org.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Museum of Power</a>, a&nbsp;former water pumping station with a miniature railway, model village and tea room.</p>

<p>Southminster&#8217;s <a href="https://www.diddydots-nursery.co.uk/gallery" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Diddydots Nursery</a> is for ages six months to five years and rated Outstanding by Ofsted, with an emphasis on exploring and learning indoors and outdoors. <a href="https://www.maldoncourtschool.org/nursery" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Maldon Court Nursery</a>, also Outstanding, caters for ages one to three.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-schools">SCHOOLS</h2>



<p><a href="https://st-ceddsprimary.co.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">St Cedd&#8217;s C of E Primary School</a>, rated Good by Ofsted, believes in children&#8217;s holistic development including teaching kindness, honesty and tolerance. The nearest state secondary is <a href="https://ormistonriversacademy.co.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ormiston Rivers Academy</a> in Burnham-on-Crouch (10 miles away), again rated Good. Independent options include <a href="https://www.maldoncourtschool.org" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Maldon Court Preparatory</a>, which places a strong emphasis on close partnership with parents and a strong family atmosphere. For secondary schools, Chelmsford is your best bet with <a href="https://essex.muddystilettos.co.uk/kids/school-reviews/new-hall-school-chelmsford/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New Hall</a>, a 45 min drive away, but famed for its equal emphasis on academics, sports, pastoral care and performing arts.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-best-kept-secret">BEST KEPT SECRET</h2>



<p>Bradwell-on-Sea was once a Roman fort called Othona, controlling the Blackwater and Colne estuaries, which led to the important Roman city of Camulodonum (modern Colchester).</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-commute">COMMUTE</h2>



<p>London is a 90 min drive without traffic (good luck with that). The nearest station is Southminster, and from there it&#8217;s around an hour and a quarter into London Liverpool Street. An annual season ticket costs £5,840.</p>
