Hip and happening: what’s new near you this week

Meet this week’s movers-and-shakers' guide to the hottest news, openings and upcoming events (spoilers, incoming)

Braxted Park Supper Club

Ssh… it’s a Secret Supper Club

Fancy heading outside for something, well, truly fancy this weekend? Head to Braxted Park in Witham on 28 and 29 August for a fully immersive dining experience complete with botanical cocktails and freshly prepared game. The stunning site’s 500 acres of unspoilt ancient parklands offers up the perfect spot for an exclusive dinner. Nestled in a quiet woodland glade overlooking Braxted Park’s tranquil lake, you’ll tuck into an innovative five-course feast cooked and prepared out on an open fire by leading chef Archie Clark of Kochi Kicthen, sip on paired menu of stylish cocktails, then be transported back to your childhood as you toast marshmallows and S’mores over the campfire. Beats another soggy sarnie picnic, right? Tickets cost from £75. See here for details.

First Site

Love at First Site

With a fresh series of exhibitions now open to the public again, the colossal First Site gallery in the heart of Colchester’s cultural quarter has also just launched a larger outdoor seating area and new food menu to boot. So, once you’ve had your educational fill of modern art (hello, ‘Tell Me The Story Of All These Things’, featuring artworks by some of Britain’s leading artists including Tracey Erin, Sarah Lucas and Cornelia Parker), you can fill up on lashings of Vit D (weather permitting, of course) and a delicious slice of quiche. Not a bad afternoon’s work, eh? The cafe is open daily from 10am-5pm; no need to book.

Rocketman

Rocketman lands in Hylands Estate

Yep, the craze for drive-in cinema continues this week with a double dose of sequins in the Elton John biopic, Rocketman. Landing at Hylands Estate, Chelmsford, on Friday 28 August, film fans can expect state of the art sound and screen, an American-diner-style drop of delicious movie eats and a mesmerising performance from Targon Egerton – who stars as the egotistical, yet hugely talented Elton John in this all-singing, all-dancing car park epic. Gates open from 8.45pm for a 9.15pm start and tickets cost from £35. Book here.

Tapas night

Tasty tapas pop-up

Sitting proudly in the heart of leafy Stock, Dandelion & Burdock Kitchen & Lounge is now offering up a slice of Spanish foodie heaven with its own take on tapas. A Friday-evening pop-up, the menu costs £30 a head and includes all your favourite small plates (washed down with a jug Sangria/bottle of Rioja, natch). Think perfectly cooked papayas bravas, prawns in garlic, chorizo in red wine sauce, crispy calamari, juicy roasted peppers, meat balls in spicy tomato sauce and a cheese and meat platter of dreams. Booking is essential, so bag yourselves a table at this boutique gem, pronto.
