The UK uses around five million tonnes of plastic every year – and nearly half of that is packaging. Shocking, right? That’s where The Refill Barn in Saffron Walden steps in, with sustainable ways to do your regular shop.
Based in Radwinter, the business was set up by husband and wife, Sam and Melissa, to help people shop more consciously. Born from a desire to stop excess plastic packaging, this minimal-waste business and coffee house is full to the brim with loose, refillable products. Completely package-free, it also has a friendly, local atmosphere – a far cry from the fluorescent lights of generic supermarkets. It’s no wonder they scooped our Muddy Stilettos Essex Best Sustainable Business award last year!
What do they stock? The Refill Barn has a huge selection to choose from! There’s a large variety of dried pantry goods, as well as a freezer full of frozen veggies. It also offers delicious snacks and sweets, and all the toiletries, gifts and homeware you need. The coffee counter also serves lovely loose-leaf teas – and quite possibly the best oat-milk flat whites in town! They even have a selection of locally-baked goods available.
Reckon this new way of shopping might be overwhelming? Trust us – the team are so welcoming it quickly becomes somewhere to make your regular shop. You just need to bring your own clean and dry refillable containers, then fill up as much or as little as you like. Forgot to bring some? No problem – The Refill Barn also has their own reusable containers to buy.
All in all, The Refill Barn offers a beautiful setting and fantastic selection of all your package-free essentials. And for newbies looking to stock up, it’s a gorgeous place to discover and be inspired by a more sustainable way to shop.
