Markshall Estate, Coggeshall
A historical country estate which makes a brilliant day out for all ages and has lots of event on throughout the year.
Set in peaceful countryside midway between Braintree and Colchester, Markshall Estate ticks all the boxes when it comes to a family-friendly day out al fresco. Dating back more than 1,000 years (it was mentioned in the Domesday Book), the 2,350-acre estate includes a 200-acre arboretum, walled garden and natural play areas, all open to the public.
Once owned by Thomas Phillips Price, Markshall’s now a charitable trust after philanthropist Phillips left his estate to the nation in 1971 (how generous?!) and is the perfect place to unwind in nature; strolling by lakes, exploring woodlands and discovering trees from around the world.
Check what’s on before you visit as there’s a whole host of seasonal events to enjoy: think farmers’ markets, family trails and theatre productions. You also won’t want to miss a bite to eat in The Orchard Kitchen, which serves delicious homemade soups, sandwiches and cakes.
