Sitting pretty in the green fields that fringe Chelmsford’s city centre, Galvin Green Man is a dining destination with serious foodie credentials.

With the Essex-born Galvin brothers – aka Chris and Jeff to their friends – at the helm, it’s no surprise that its top-notch cuisine has scooped up some pretty impressive awards. From winning Best Pub in the UK (yes, the whole of the UK) in 2021 to winning its fifth Michelin Bib Gourmand, this Essex eatery is the place to come for posh nosh. The best part? There’s not a hint of pretension in sight. This is fine dining with a wonderfully warm welcome.

Housed in a beautifully refurbished building that dates back to 1341, the interiors serve up a rustic yet modern feel with sleek leather banquettes, exposed brickwork, contemporary chandeliers and panoramic views courtesy of a floor-to-ceiling glass wall. There’s a cosy pub area for the drinkers, the stylish main restaurant for the foodies and a sun-trap terrace for parents who want to keep an eye on the kiddos in the garden’s wooden play area.

What’s on the menu? British classics with a contemporary twist. Think the likes of Leek and Potato Velouté, Great Garnett’s Duo of Pork with rainbow chard and bacon jus and Caramelised Hazelnut Lemon Tart. Yum. What’s even more delicious is the fact that the chefs use an abundance of local ingredients in their dishes. The herbs come from the restaurant’s very own garden – it doesn’t get much more local than that!

Choose from the mouth-watering Main, bargainous Bib Gourmand or glorious Garden menu. There’s also small plates for the sprogs and a cracking Sunday roast. Oh, and did we mention the expert wine pairings? We could go on. And on…
