Fir real! The best places in Essex to get your tree this year…
Spruce or fir? Whatever tree tickles your fancy, you’ll find the finest selection at these fab farms. With a side of social distancing, shopping and (erm) circus tents…

Fred Smith Christmas Trees, Colchester
Fred Smith really puts the ‘family’ in family-run business with not one, but two generations of the brood having a hand in growing and selling its fantastic firs. Where to find them? In the (very) pretty village of Boxted, just a few miles north of Colchester. From firs to spruces, sizes start at 3ft and go as big as 10ft (think Home Alone vibes). Plus, this firm offers local and long-distance delivery depending on location.
Hurleys Christmas Tree Farm, Battlesbridge
Where better to get your tree than somewhere that PM Boris himself was considering? Hurleys Farm recently competed for the honour of decorating No 10’s doorway in a nationwide competition, which saw them become one of 15 finalists. And, although they got pipped to the post, we still reckon they boast some of the finest firs around. Here’s to next year, guys!

Slamsleys, Great Notley
This family-run farm is ordinarily known for print making and fruity gin infusions, but come Christmas time it’s all about the Christmas Tree Barn. Not only can you pick your Christmas tree at a socially-distanced distance (not easy to say FYI), but you can also take a gander at their gorgeous wreaths and decorations while you’re there. Oh, and there’s even a click-and-collect service for those who don’t fancy perusing in person.

Marsh Farm, South Woodham Ferrers
When it comes to Christmas, Marsh Farm goes big and I mean big. Perfect for kids tall or small, its Christmas Tree Village is a truly magical place to find the ‘one’. Enjoy festive food and photo opps (hence the small entry fee) while you pick from one of their perfectly symmetrical Nordmann firs. Then roll up to the incredible Christmas Shop, which is housed in a huge top tent, to continue the merrymaking.
Christmas Wrapped Up, Dunmow
As the name suggests, Christmas Wrapped Up is designed to cater for your every decorative whim. The huge farm just outside High Easter is brimming with top-notch trees and once you’ve found your favourite you can choose from a sparkling array of lights and decs to dress it up. Plus, you can design your own fresh wreath or garland with their made-to-order service.
